At a restaurant ~ Part 1 ~

Vocabulary:

irasshai mase: welcome (...Shop person say to guests)
Hitsuyou : to need
Yoyaku : reservation
X-nin : nin means 'people', so ‘3 nin’ is 3(people), ‘8 nin’ is 8(people)
Matsu : to wait (‘Omachi’ is polite way of ‘matsu’)
Shou shou : a bit or a moment
Seki = seat (‘Oseki' is polite way of ‘seki’)
Eigo = English
Sugu = soon / Right now
omochi suru = to bring you (something) : 'omochi' is the polite way of 'motte kuru'

Waiter: irasshai mase
(welcome)
You: Yoyaku ga hitsuyou desu ka? Yoyaku shite inai no desu ga…
(Do we need a reservation? I’m afraid we didn’t make it…)
Waiter: nanmei sama desuka?(How many in your group?)
You: 5nin desu.(We are a group of five.)
Waiter: shou shou omachi kudasai.
(Wait a moment please.)
Waiter: oseki ga arimasu node kochira ni douzo.(There are some seats for you, please come this way.)
You: Yokatta desu, arigatou.
(good, thanks.)
You: Eigo no menyuu wa arimasu ka?(Do you have a menu in English?)
Waiter: Hai gozaimasu. Suguni omochi shi masu.(Yes we have. I’ll be back with it soon.)

At a restaurant ~ Part 2 ~

Vocabulary:
Osusume= to recommend ('osusume' is the polite way of 'susumeru')
Honjitsu = today( we also say ‘kyou’ in Japanese )
Osashimi = sliced raw fish ('Osashimi' is the polite way of 'Sashimi')
Kesa = this morning
Shinsen = fresh
Maguro = tuna
Tako = octopus
Oishii = delicious or tasty
Mazui = nasty or ‘bad-tasting’
Tondemonai = unbelievable or ‘no way’
Zettai = never ( we also say ‘keshite’ in Japanese )
Doushite = why
Honki = serious ( we also say ‘majime (ni)’ in Japanese )
Hoka = anything else or ‘another’
Kashikomari mashita = Yes, sir. (This is very polite way to say 'wakari mashita')


Guest A : Osusume wa nan desu ka?
( what do you recommend? )
Waiter: honjitsu wa maguro no osashimi ga osusume desu. Kesa shinsen na maguro ga hairi mashita node..
( I recommend sashimi of tuna today. We got a really fresh tuna this morning. )
Guest A: Oishisou desu ne. Sore wo kudasai.
( It sounds delicious. I choose it. )
Waiter: shinsen na tako mo gozaimasu ga, ikaga desu ka?
( We also have a really fresh octopus, how about it? )
Guest A: ie ie tondemonai! Watashi wa tako wa zettai tabemasen!
( no no..no way~! I never eat octopus! )
Waiter: sou desu ka..( I see… )
Guest B: doushite desu ka?! Tabete mimashou yo! Oishii kamo shiremasen.
( Why not?! We should try some! It might be tasty. )
Guest A: honki desu ka? ( are you serious? )
Guest B: mochiron. ( sure )
Guest A: hai hai, wakarimashita. Demo mazukattara anata ga zenbu tabete kudasai ne.
( okay okay, but if it was not good you should eat all of them, okay? )
Guest B: sore de ii desu yo! (It’s a deal!)
Waiter: Dewa maguro to tako no osashimi wo omochi shimasu. Hoka wa yoroshii desuka?
( Then I serve you sashimi of tuna and octopus. Anything else, sir? )
Guest A: hoka wa mata atode chuumon shimasu.
( I’ll think about it and order later )
Waiter: kashikomari mashita
( Yes sir )

At a restaurant ~ Part 3 ~

Meg and Bill, they are going about together.
This is the conversation of them at a restaurant.

Waiter: Omatase shimashita, douzo.
(Here you are, I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.)
Meg: Oishisou! (This looks great!)
Bill: Dore mo oishisou dane. (They all look good.)
Meg: Sore wa nani? (What is it?)
Bill: Kore wa Hotate-gai no sashimi dayo
(This is Sashimi of a scallop…)
Meg: Sukoshi tabete mitemo ii? (Can I try some?)
Bill: Ii kedo… (Well…okay..)
Meg: Oishii!! (This is delicious!)
…she tries to eat some more…
Bill: Chotto matta! (Stop!)
Kore wa boku no mono! (This is mine!)
Meg: Kechi! (You’re so mean!)
Motto tabe tai! (I want to eat more!)
Bill: Dame! (No!). Tokoro de kimi no wa dou?
(anyway, how about yours?)
Meg: Kore, nandaka henna aji ga suru…
(This is….this tastes strange…)
Bill: Hahaha(*LOL*) Nani wo tanonda no?
(What was your order?)
Meg: ika no shiokara….
Bill: Sore wa nani? (What is it?)
Meg: Kono mise no osusume datte..
(It is the ‘today’s special’ at this restaurant.)
Bill: Jyaa…sore ga nani ka kiite miyou.
(well.. why don’t we ask the waiter about it)
Sumimasen! (excuse me!)
Waiter: Hai, oyobi desu ka? (Yes, sir. What can I do for you?)
Bill: “Ika no shiokara” tte nan desu ka? (What is “ika no shiokara”?)
Waiter: ah, sore wa ika no naizou no shio-zuke desu.
(oh, it’s a salted squid guts.)
Meg & Bill : oe~!! (yuck!!)

~  Vocabulary ~

Hotate-gai : scallop
Sukoshi : ‘a little’ or ‘some’
Tabete miru: ‘try’ / Taberu: ‘have’ , ‘eat’
Oishii: delicious, great, good, tasty
Motto: more
~ shi tai: want to (do)
Tokoro de: by the way, anyway
Kimi: you( normally we use ‘anata’ but they’re a boyfriend and a girlfriend.
In this case, you can use ‘kimi’ as you. also 'Boku' is the same meaning of
'Watashi'(I), guys use 'Boku' or 'Ore' instead of 'Watashi'(I), 'Boku' sounds
casual and 'Ore' sounds rough; sometimes 'Ore' sounds cool though...
Nandaka…: something like…
Henna aji: strange taste
Tanomu: to order
Mise: shop, restaurant
Kiku=Tazuneru: to ask (Kiite miyou=why don’t we ask~)
Naizou: guts
ika: squid

Normally we use ‘Keigo’(polite expressions) to others. However,
when we talk to close friends or boyfriends or girlfriends or
family, we omit 'Keigo' like ‘~desu’ or ‘~ masu’.
In the conversations at a restaurant, Meg said: “Sore wa nani?”(What is it?)
It’s the same meaning of “Sore wa nan desu ka?”(What is it?)
